Ortho-K took the industry by storm with its innovative concept and could be a great solution for patients who aren’t keen on the idea of eye surgery and don’t want to experience any pain or discomfort. Ortho-K’s contact lenses are fitted in and taken out like regular contact lenses and you are able to do this in the comfort of your own home.
Let’s find out more about what Ortho-K is and whether it is the right thing for you…
So, what is “Ortho-K”?!
Orthokeratology, otherwise known as “Ortho-K”, is an “overnight vision correction” treatment or more commonly referred to as corneal reshaping… without the surgery! Ortho-K is a treatment in which uniquely curated overnight contact lenses are put in to alter the shape of the cornea to give the patient 20/20 or 20/40 vision.
What happens when I take the overnight lenses out?
Ortho-K overnight lenses get to work whilst you are sleeping. The Ortho-K lenses are worn every night or every other night, and then removed in the morning. Once you remove the contact lenses, you should be able to go about your day-to-day activities without the need for your usual glasses or every day contact lenses.
Patients can find the experience of being glasses or contact lenses free an emotional experience! Ortho-K can be an amazing solution for those who swim or do water sports or simply those who struggle with wearing contact lenses during the day. As this is not eye surgery, you do need to make sure you maintain the regularity in putting in the nightly contact lenses as it is a temporary fix and without continual use of the overnight lenses, your eyes will revert back to their original shape.
Who does Ortho-K work best for?
Ortho-K overnight contact lenses are not for everybody and you will need to seek out professional advice from a healthcare practitioner to determine whether it will work for you however, Ortho-K lenses are known to help and correct those with myopia or low grade astigmatism and work better for some patients more than others.
If children are fitted with Ortho-K overnight lenses, we do advise that parental guidance and care is of the utmost importance and regular checks and proper a proper hygiene regimen is enforced to prevent any eye infections that may occur.
What happens after I start wearing my Ortho-K lenses?
You will be able to go about your daily activities as normal without the use of glasses or other contact lenses during the day. Regular assessments are needed back at your opticians to ensure the Ortho-K lenses are working at their best for you and that you are comfortable and not at risk of any infections. As with any treatment, it is recommended that you adhere to the guidelines and advice given to you by your optician to avoid any unnecessary complications.
